How the cosmos affects our culture.

Happy New Year!

Ready or not, 2009 is just about here! Let's look at some of the astrology for the coming year. This will be a good overview for the events I'll be commenting on as we go.

The dominant configuration will continue to be the Uranus/Saturn opposition, which will be operable the entire year. The times the opposition perfects are in February and September, though look for notable events for all of 2009. This event pertains to changing (Uranus) the status quo of operations (Saturn), breakthroughs in business or commerce, and yes, continued economic instability. Universal health care is quite a possibility considering that Uranus is transiting Pisces (universal) and Saturn's in Virgo (health). In culture, expect new (Uranus) celebrities attaining mainstream (Saturn) status, just like we seen with Barack Obama in 2008. New trends are indicated, and surprises in sports are certain.

Jupiter enters Aquarius in early January and will be in the Water Bearer's sign for the entire year. In January, this event is ushered in with television going digital. Expect an even greater acceleration in technology compared to recent years! Careful what you buy, because something better will come out tomorrow. Jupiter in Aquarius strongly correlates with advances in air and space travel, so look for some new developments there. This combination is quite liberal or progressive, so expect a marked shift to the left, and the politicians in Washington following suit.

In the spring, Jupiter will begin a long conjunction will Neptune which will pretty much be in effect for the duration of the year. Jupiter/Neptune, especially in Aquarius, feels like people singing Kumbaya -- a sense of community, cohesion and connectedness is ahead. Neptune also goes with fashion trends or glamour; Jupiter will ramp up innovations in these areas. Expect electronica or other instrumental music to be in vogue. There is likely to be a resurgence of interest in progressive (Aquarius) spiritual understandings (Jupiter/Neptune). Astrology is likely to increase in popularity and anything non-denominational that strives for greater inclusiveness.

Saturn moves into Libra in late October, though it will retrograde back into Virgo (in 2010) before settling into Libra. Saturn in Libra is very cultural in scope, a combination that will solidify (Saturn) the styles and norms (Libra) that this new time frame is bringing in. The ways that we treat each other (Libra) are maturing (Saturn), quite an emphasis on being politically correct. Expect to see an insistence on fairness -- I'm afraid that there'll be some culture police out there wanting conformity. However, Saturn doesn't get to Libra until late in the year, so the Jupiter/Neptune vibe will be far more relevant.  Also, when Saturn gets to Libra it will square Pluto, so this makes it even more serious and urgent.

Venus goes retrograde between March 6 and April 17 -- a time frame to reasses relationships as well as the status of your bank account. Primarily occurring in Aries, this passage asks us if our relationships are really serving our individual (Aries) interests. It's a time to be healthily selfish, to step forward with assertiveness in how we connect with others. Venus retrograde often correlates with reruns in culture, retrospectives and reunions. Mars goes retrograde on December 20, so it's most relevant for 2010.

2009 looks like an exciting year. With Uranus opposed Saturn and Jupiter/Neptune in Aquarius, It's full of newness. Obviously a new Administration will be installed and culture itself is ready for a resurgence which will match the spirit of hope, optimism and increased togetherness.
